Investing in Distressed Credit Secured by Hard Assets
Headquartered in Hong Kong with team members in Chicago, Harbin and Shanghai. Jade Gate is derived from the Chinese name for the Jade Gate Frontier Post (玉门关), the primary link between what was then referred to as “The Western Regions” (西域) and “The Middle Kingdom,” or China (中国). Built over two thousand years ago, it served as the primary conduit for communication and commerce between East and West via the Silk Road. Like the original Jade Gate, our firm bridges East and West through a combination of international management, investment professionalism, and local expertise.
We focus on distressed credit, bank capital relief transactions, dislocation opportunities, repositioning projects, and the corresponding underlying real estate. The value creation process involves several discrete areas, such as untangling complex capital structures, arbitraging the cost of capital between a bank’s regulatory cost of equity and Investor’s, and deploying our extensive hard asset real estate expertise.
Areas of Practice
Pools of Distressed Credits
We source pools of distressed credits directly from banks and asset management companies (AMCs) in conjunction with our servicing partner.
Large Single Credits
Either a large single credit or group of credits secured by a large, partially completed commercial real estate asset or development project. Opportunities generally result from liquidity issues related to poor capital structure rather than economic malaise.
Structuring
We may structure either pools or single credits to generate regulatory capital relief or preserve regulatory capital for the selling financial institution. Our capital is generally senior and overcollateralized, sacrificing minimal upside while truncating downside risk.

“We must all obey the great law of change. It is the most powerful law of nature.”
– Edmund Burke
